A NEW POPE
When Pope Francis made his debut in March of 2013, few knew who he was, and no-one could expect the transformative spirit and human-approach to the Gospel that he would bring to the papacy and to the world.
Today, the next successor of St. Peter, Pope Leo XIV, was elected and quickly, we searched for clues to his future leadership.
The first clue comes from his name. In choosing the name, Leo XIV, he echoes the legacy of the last Leo who instituted Catholic Social Teaching. Often considered the “best kept secret” in the Church, we can only hope that this Leo will also shine light on the rights of workers, option for the poor and vulnerable, stewardship of creation, a spirit of solidarity, among other related components of human dignity.
A second clue was revealed in Pope Leo’s opening remarks and how we can expect him to lead during these divisive times. Twice he used the phrase, “building bridges.” This is not only a nod to Pope Francis, it is likely revealing the foundation of his papal agenda.
Another clue is that he is the first from the United States. As an American, one wonders if his election is to challenge the spirit of individualism of his home country and its populist commander-in-chief. Like Pope John Paul II’s impact during the rise of communism, what will be Leo’s impact as global politics near its boiling point, with the US adding heat by the day.
His recent tweets, as Cardinal, provide further insight into his views on how we treat immigrants and refugees in America, and given his many years in Peru, we can expect him to have a heart and love for the poor.
However, despite the clues in unpacking this new household name and leader of the Catholic Church, we should remain open to the unexpected. Most of all, we should be hopeful.
With hope and gratitude, the Holy Spirit has clearly entered the scene by giving us a new faith leader to shepherd us forward.
There is much to be thankful for and may God bless Pope Leo XIV and all who will follow his lead as he points us to the way of Christ in this time in history.
