Heavenly Field of Dreams- A Reflection
I imagine, emerging from the tall cornfields from left to right, generations of ancestors and loved ones. Grandparents, uncles, aunts, friends, those who I never met, and those I barely knew. Saints and sinners, and all those whose intercession was and wasn’t called on before. Like the Field of Dreams, they reveal themselves in all their heavenly glory, prepared to intercede on my behalf.
In the stands around the infield are my companions- my comrades. From distant and not-so-distant days, they fill the rafters cheering my name, lifting my burdened spirit, and celebrating each minor and major victory. They, too, raise their prayers for my healing and strength.
In the dugout, we find my team. My closest of closest, my loved ones who are beginning to fear that a part of their soul is fading away. They sacrifice, advance my cause, and attend to the holistic needs of this next, and every, contest. They too, require prayers and support
In the corner of the dugout, are my doctors, nurses, like the trainers who are prepared to initiate healing at any moment.
I stand on the mound, surrounded by a heavenly and earthly witness, prepared for this new and unexpected season. The inevitable wins and losses will pile up at various times, but each day will present enough at-bats to enhance a healing that goes beyond my one body.
This field of prayers will grow. Others will join in prayer, and perhaps, in the process, strengthen our bonds of a human family. The outside noise that consumes our attention will begin to focus on the fundamentals, essentially what matters most in life.
Tears of joy and sorrow, confidence and fear, will each have their moments. At times, the outlook will look bleak, like an 8-run deficit, while at other time, success will feel inevitable. The gift is the opportunities and invitations that will be discovered in this new season, for me and for us.
Play ball, someone soon yells from the distance. It is time to step up to the plate, and to tap into a healing that has already begun.
When the sun sets on this season, I am confident that champagne will flow. Many new lessons were learned, and I will be closer to all, and closer to our God.
